Waiting to See the Birth of Venus

Good morning!

It's 1:03am. Yes, I'm usually awake at this time. :D

I would like share this painting I made in early 2012, after a year as an exchange student in Paris. While in Europe, I sketched and photographed many visitors and local people. I was very interested in their brief reaction and interaction with historical places and monuments. When I visited Florence, I stepped in line for the Uffizi Gallery. After 4 hours of waiting, I finally arrived at the entrance and looked back at the endless line. I thought “wow, all these people are waiting to see The Birth of Venus.”

The drawer is melting...

During a studio visit, a friend asked me why the drawer is melting out of the fridge? I'm not religious but when I was looking for ways to compose "View from the 8th Floor", I found the mother Mary statue in my basement. I thought the statue illustrated the theme of home or protection. And I decided to put the statue in the fridge.

The drawer is positioned like her legs, the shelves are her breasts, the light is her head and the void space of the building to the right becomes her arm. And she cradles the baby on her lap...

cheers

S.

Vote for Irregular Space III

Irregular Space III, acrylic on dibond board, 8ft x 10ft
vote for Irregular Space III everyday until Nov 1 at: http://www.downtownmarkham.ca/publicart

Irregular Space III was a project completed on site at Downtown Markham for a painting competition. 20 artists across Ontario were selected to paint a 8ft x 10ft hoarding board within the 5 day time frame.

For this project, I decided to continue my exploration of irregular spaces and perspective planes. Irregular Space III derived from a thought when I was taking the subway. I wondered if I was taking the train, or was the train taking me?

If you like this painting, please vote for it at: Downtownmarkham.ca/publicart
(you can vote everyday until Nov 1!)

Thank you very much for your support!
